Employment law changes in April 2024 to be aware of:
April is always a changing point for employment law and from April 2024, there are a number of key issues which come into force which employers need to be aware of, including:-
From the 6th April 2024 the latest Vento bands for damages and injury to feeling have been issued:
The Presidents of the Employment Tribunals have published the revised bands of compensation for injury to feelings in discrimination cases
The new bands, for claims issued on or after 6 April 2024, are:-
- lower band: this will be for the least serious cases, such as where the discriminatory act is a one-off - £1,200 to £11,700k
- middle band: serious cases, but ones where an award in the highest band would not be appropriate - £11,700k to £35,200k
- upper band: these are the most serious cases, such as where there has been a lengthy campaign of discriminatory harassment which has a profound effect on the victim - £35,200k to £58,700k (with the possibility of the most serious cases exceeding £58,700k)
What are the Vento guidelines?
They are named after a landmark case from 2003 (Vento v Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police) where the Court of Appeal set out clear guidelines for courts and Tribunals to apply when they are assessing injury to feelings awards.
